UN location, legal structure require 'serious reconsideration'

TEHRAN, Jun. 13 (MNA) – An Iranian MP says Ban Ki-moon’s recent remarks have proved that the United Nations is a tool in the hands of world powers, adding the location and legal structure of the UN are in great need of reconsideration.

Seyyed Hossein Naghavi Hosseini, Spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told Mehr News that the removal of Saudi Arabia from the UN child-rights blacklist has once again proved that the United Nations is a mere tool in the hands of hegemonic world powers, adding “the fact that the UN secretary general reacted to this issue and expressed regret shows that Ban Ki-moon himself wishes to admit to the fact that the UN is being used as an instrument by the powers to achieve their goals.”

“The main issue at the moment is the location of the UN Headquarters,” Naghavi said, adding “the location has certain rules and regulations with which the Americans do not comply.”

He went on to add, “we have not forgotten the way Americans hindered the process of visa issuance for Iran’s representative in the UN, when issuing visas in this international organization has its own regulations and the country where the HQ is located does not have a right to create problems.”

“Also, the legal structure of the UN including veto power and the Security Council structure needs serious reconsideration,” he said, adding “because many of these structures date back to the World War II with conflicts among hegemonic powers. At the moment, those conditions no longer exist and each country is an independent international actor.”
